After the what was billed as another ice age the doodlers of York broke free of the snow to remerge, Sharpies in hand and ready to fill more A3 paper with a mixture of the naughty and the nice. Nadine seemed intent on making something resembling a bordello from the off with this.No matter what you hear I was sat to her right and saw the first few lines, it was always going to be rude! Even if she tried to distract us by early on commenting on "how few bums and boobs" there were being drawn tonight.

The one below seemed to work out quite nicely, another one that seemed to hold on to one single composition to hold it together, quite often with so many people, in this case 5, working on one piece they can fragment. "Pen and ink squid" seems to have kept it's sanity in a way that's pleasing indeed

Strange doodling in Yorkshire

Sometimes doodling at doodlemanifesto nights can be just plain good fun, a way to share the experience of creation among a group of people, this is what generally happens in York, the doodle below is an example. I've called this Marge vrs the dragon.

The there's the nights in Leeds, it could be the venue, The Chemic Tavern, it's not in the best part of town, nor is it the most glamorous venue, but that's not it as it was just as weird at the Holey Moley party. So maybe it's the people, more specifically the mix of people, I can't be totally to blame as I'm always present at the York nights. There not always weird. Either way Wednesday was another night of crazy doodling to delight and disturb. Enjoy.

Illuminate York meets Doodlemanifesto and the Big Draw

We were invited to do a workshop at the Art Gallery in York on the 31st Oct, yes Halloween, the ideal time for us to get spooky. But just to suprise everyone we based some of the work on the Sishiko exhibition of Japanese textiles. I prepared a few so we could get started straight away. We then let the people of York and a few doodlers loose on them. A few are shown below. I have copies of the originals so I will get those up on Flickr at some point and you can see first hand how they were used and abused. As every I was equally impressed and disturbed.

Cat and Paul enjoyed an hour filling this in, I added a bit towards the end. I quite like it being unfinished however.

New doodlers were welcome, we had a number of people wander in and join us, hopefully we'll be joined by them again when we meet up in York at the White Swan. Here's hoping, the more the merrier.

I think this one even looks vaguely Japanese.

This one was a lovely flower originally, it was placed upside down and turned into a weird bird, these things are bound to happen and are indeed most welcome when people get the green light to doodle.

Quiet Tuesday in the Mucky Duck

The calm before the Holey Moley storm on Thursday saw some of the folk of Doodlemanifesto in York meet up for a couple of hours at the White Swan. A relatively peaceful evening, especially compared to recent nights, saw us doodle these four. Hope you like them.

Featured doodlers from this night, in no particular order: Steven Try, Nadine Saupe, Caolan McMahon and Laura Kishimoto.

Tuesday night's usual venue has been shifted to Pulse on Fossgate, we'll be using the Apple Macs there to create a whole new world of doodling madness. So for all you people out there that don't like to get their hands dirty with sharpies you can use one of the graphics tablets. Before you ask, yes you can use colour.

If you want to come along then drop me a message, it's invite only, but everyones invited. We just need to know about it first.

Finally we'll be running a 2hr workshop at the Art Gallery in York this Saturday (31st Oct) from 6pm. there will be a little theming of the doodles, but usually rules will apply. it doesn't have to look much like anything and it must be collaborative.

Twisted night in Leeds

What started off as a quiet night in The Chemic ended up with four of the most disturbing images we've managed so far. From the ethereal splendour of "The birth of Adam" to the hideous beast that's all mouth to the two fish based doodles it was all good. More to follow I'm sure, some things are inevitable!

Another update from the world of the doodlers

In a few weeks our numbers have grown again, not just at the evenings in York and Leeds but also people finding us on Twitter, if you haven't yet, the @doodlemanifesto is where you'll find us.

We've been asked to run a session as part of the arty party exhibition at Temple Works in Leeds on the 22nd November to celebrate the homecoming of the Travelling Moleskines, a great honour for us, I have some special ideas for that night. Another exciting and well overdue development is doodlemanifesto's movement into the strange new world of colour and the digital age, this will take place @pulseyork on the 29th Oct, so bring along your Spectrum's and Commodore 64's and it'll be low res doodling all round. It'll be our own space for night, a chance to do all those things I keep telling you are forbidden, that's not to say I won't bring a load of sharpies and stubby markers. Drop me a message if you're interested in attending.

It's been a while!

Having successfully negotiated forest fires, aged a year, suffered the slings and arrows of upgrading to Snow Leopard and all the stressful nights of staring at this bloody laptop I have finally emerged out the other side and will now solemnly promise to update the blog more often. Not to mention more importantly the website. Since the last time we've established a doodlemanifesto night in Leeds @thechemictavern and carried on supping fine ale and doodling at the same time.

We have many new friends, all of whom are jumping in with both feet into this doodling malarky. It would seem this twitter business it finding all sorts of newdoodlers so if you're not already then follow us for updates live from the nights @doodlemanifesto.

A date for the diary (apart the usual nights in York and Leeds) is our appearance at the Illuminate York festival, we'll be at York City Art Gallery between 6-8pm on the 31st of October, it's both a Saturday and Halloween, so expect spooky doodling.

In a week that saw Doodlemanifesto start a night at the Chemic Tavern in Leeds and a brief return to Pivo in York we managed to produce some fun work. Even if having a night in Leeds does mean I have to drink coke - it's worth it. These will follow after a brief trip to London this weekend, not on doodling business, more about celebrating a 30th birthday, alas not mine. That's well behind me.

The two above were done by Lukas and me, while drinking exotic beer in a very warm Pivo Bar, while listening to a blend of 70's Fleetwood Mac and Easy Listening. Not much of an improvement of the music in The White Swan, but we struggled through.

Latest News on Doodlemanifesto

It's been a busy month for all concerned with Doodlemanifesto, since the fun of Fiesta we've been expanding out doodlers to the residents of York and beyond. Building on that we're in talks with the lovely people from the council about getting more people involved in a specific month long project that will culminate with an exhibition of all the work produced.

We're moving into west yorkshire next with a night at The Chemic Tavern, this will please many of our regulars who live out that way, it also opens up more chances to get new people along. Jon from Artfist recommended the place and it has the unique blend of Beer, Good Music and a Chippy next door. So we'll be there on the 1st of July, drawing boards and pens at the ready from about 7 onwards.

We're also getting lots of people follow us on Twitter, it seems that this internet thing might catch on yet! I've also got a Wacom tablet so once I get the hang of that I'll be up for doodling online, we won't be tied to meeting in person.

Finally getting round to posting some images from the event we did in York in May. The people of York were invited to join in our unique brand of collaborative doodling and we weren't disappointed with the results. The full set of work will be viewed at www.doodlemanifesto.co.uk soon, but here's a brief collection. We recruited a few new doodlers and we're now looking to start a night in Leeds. I don't know quite who contributed to which ones, so we'll call them 'as done by the doodlers of York for now' perhaps those responsible will own up and thus make my life easier. Hope you enjoy.

Doodlemanifesto Radio Debut

Yes you heard it right, Me and Martin made it to the big time, all be it locally, with an appearance on BBC Radio York on the Jonathan Cowap show. We'd been asked to in and talk about how Doodlemanifesto works, bring in some work and have it appraised by an expert. After our stint on the radio it was over to The City Art Gallery to look over the space for Fiesta2009 where we will be running workshops, getting people involved and getting new members hopefully. Tuesday the 21st saw some accomplished doodling

Here's the result of a sunny tuesday night in York, we filled up on burgers and bangers and mash. We even managed to create a couple that might not be as strange as others, although the look on that owl's face is all together wrong. As for the demented spong monkeys, it's better left unsaid. There was me, Dom, Anna and Ben.

On other news, me and Traff are making our broadcasting debut, follow us on twitter as doodlemanifesto to find out when, but it's in the next week. Also we're doing a doodling session for the Fiesta day in York on the 16th of May, we've been given York City Art Gallery as a venue. Mental. A busy and part disturbing night on Tuesday, no run ins with the law, which is always a bonus. Me, Anna, Ben, Lukas and Ritch sat for a few hours and emptied our brains onto paper. This was the result. Hope it's appreciated. Looking forward to your feedback, whoever you are.

The product of the meeting of the 24th March

We met at the Old White Swan in York, Me, Traff, Che, Ritch and Dom met for a few hours of laughs, drawing and most of all doodling. It was Che and Doms first night a Doodlemanifesto so went gentle with them. A good evening was had by all, special thanks to Ritch for the lift home and for the lovely policeman that failed to notice I was sat in the back in a kiddies booster seat.

Manifesto Nights

A few example or work done on one of our nights at the White Swan in York, working on these we had Anna, Ben, Ritch, Traff and me. We spent about 3 hours at the most on them. The usual routine we all get an A3 sheet to start on, work on it for about 20 minutes and pass it to the left. That continues until we're all happy with the results. Not sure how Einstein made an appearance, but by nature it's random so anything can end up in there.

A Hammer style egg.

This is something we did over the course of a few weeks, we did it originally on some graph paper, which I guessed helped. That and the Hammer films we were watching, in this you see the hallmarks of Hammer. From the bubbling potions to the weird vampire-esque figure in the middle. There's even a strange Tesla coil at the bottom. It was all a bit too well organised, but very good fun. About time I started

I'm in the midst of creating a website that will showcase the work created by Doodlemanifesto. This is a sometime loose and sometime organised group of illustrators, artists and generally and more importantly lovers of drawing. We take our inspiration from whoever is there with us. All of the work created is a combined effort, we all start with a blank sheet of A3, after 10/15/20 minutes we swap over, the thing we started is then off to be continued by someone else. To take in whatever direction they choose.

This way of working isn't new, anyone that has ever been tormented by art classes will be aware of all the ways teachers try to free you from working in a set way, but what we do is create something that is designed to just be fun. After an hour or so people become less concerned with being precious about their own art and more involved in how each drawing is growing organically. This is half the value of the work created, the process, the bringing together sometimes of complete strangers, all in the name of doodling.

You don't have to be a genius, you don't have to know what you're going to do when the pen hits the paper. What you consider a mistake will inspire the next person. Hope you like the work on here.

Opposite is a rather time consuming drawing that took the best part of a couple of months on and off, based on a couple of quicker doodles it was a challenge to see if something more detailed could be created from what was a humble beginning. I will sort and post the original doodles, I have them all photographed at stage to show the development.
